In the dining hall, where racism had reared its head, George’s friends demonstrated the love and loyalty he had awakened in them. One of them recalled, “He brought his tray to a table where a student recently come from the South was eating. This student did not relish the idea of eating with a Negro, so he expressed his dissatisfaction by rattling his cutlery and scraping his chair, and finally he gathered up his tray with his provisions and went to an adjoining table. The students at that table had been watching. So when the Southerner came to their table, they rattled their cutlery, scraped their chairs, gathered their trays, and went to the table where Carver was sitting.”
